Keys to improving the work environment in our organization

Many of us spend more time at the workplace than at home and, let's face it, we likely spend more time with our colleagues on a daily basis than with our own family. Isn't this reason enough to take care of the work environment in organizations?

Many of us spend more time at work than in our own homes and, let's face it, we probably spend more time with our colleagues on a daily basis than with our own families. Isn't that more than enough reason to take care of the work environment in organizations?

No matter what type of work is done within a company, the work environment critically determines the professional life of any employee. It is influenced by very different aspects such as the physical space, the relationship with other colleagues, or the particular organizational culture of each company. Articulating all these elements poses a significant challenge for organizations, but achieving it guarantees productivity, camaraderie, well-being, and ultimately, the happiness of workers.

But happiness is not just a goal; it is the foundation for achieving many other things. It has been proven that when we are happy, we are more optimistic, creative, and productive. Everyone likes working with positive and energetic people; happiness is contagious. On the contrary, stress and worry distract us, ruin our motivation, and, worse still, can trigger various ailments that significantly affect our health. It is the happiness of employees that characterizes a good work environment. It is no coincidence that a company as relevant as Mahou San Miguel has launched a strategic division dedicated to encouraging the well-being of its workers called the 'Happiness Area', or that many others want to improve with us through Wellness or Mindfulness techniques.

What are the keys to a good work environment?

It is best to take things step by step when it comes to improving the atmosphere in an organization. We could start by highlighting the importance of the context in which we operate, a well-designed workspace, where an element as basic as the presence of natural light can improve our physical well-being. These aspects should not be underestimated.

Good communication between people is another important aspect. Open and transparent communication is essential. Any company must give employees' opinions the value they deserve so that they feel they belong to the organization and that work is truly part of their lives. However, the organization must also ensure its objectives prevail, and it is essential that everyone knows what they are working for. This two-way communication will break down the barriers of hierarchical organizations.

Maintaining a good work environment in organizations generates people committed to projects, willing to work for the common good, and more inclined to build teams. When team spirit is strong, all members will lean towards supporting any decision made as a team while still sharing their points of view and perspectives on how to achieve the company's goals.

Finally, we must not forget that employees feel better when they achieve some recognition. Creating a culture of feedback does not mean there is always a monetary reward; on many occasions, simple verbal recognition stimulates the motivation of any worker, and it is free! Such a mindset is healthy for the organization as a whole. Rewarding good employees promotes good habits in all workers. It is also highly recommended to do it as a team, fostering constructive experiences both inside and outside the office. Organizing travel giveaways or simply raffling off tickets to shows or the cinema exposes teams to experiences applicable to work.

With procedures like these, we are not only closer to achieving a positive work environment, but we also boost productivity and progress in organizations.

But we must remember, as William Thomson Kelvin, British physicist and mathematician (1824-1907), said: "What is not defined cannot be measured. What is not measured cannot be improved. What is not improved always degrades." If we want to improve the work environment in our organizations, we must think strategically, defining objectives, measuring the current situation we find ourselves in, and charting the strategy that leads us to improve our results.

It is more than proven that this strategic thinking to improve our work environment has a direct relationship with increased productivity in organizations, helping them meet their objectives and generating a brand image that, in the long run, will attract and retain the much-desired talent.
